By Sylvia R. Chamberlin

EHR software, also called electronic health record software, is useful for keeping track of patient information. This software can perform a wide variety of purposes and fill in many functions for the hospital. Cutting down on paper waste, saving money and transferring patient information easily between doctors are all benefits of using this software. It's also an excellent way to store massive amounts of patient information. Employees at hospitals are even able to scan in past paperwork to store digitally in the database.

These systems are able to save several different document formats such as, audio, image and video files. JPEGs from scanned images and photos are simple to create. The formats workers can use to save these documents include, JPEG, GIF and PDF documents. Workers can also install OCR recognition software to scan documents for conversion to a word processing document. Also referred to as, optical character recognition software, this program will recognize characters of text on a page and re-creates that in a word-processing document. Audio and video records can be recorded and saved as WAV, MP3 or AVI format.

It's not difficult at all to save paperwork in digital form using EHR software. First of all, hospital employees will scan the document into their computers using a standard printer/scanner. Once this task is completed, the workers are able to enter the electronic health record system to upload the document to a patient's file. This new piece of information is now easily accessed from anywhere using a computer with Internet and a login.

A digital patient database provides much to hospitals in the way of benefits. Creating digital versions of paperwork allows hospitals to more closely adhere to EHR Meaningful Use policies that are intended to reduce filing errors that could potentially affect a patient's health. Going digital allows hospitals to save extra money in paper and cuts down on waste. Patient information will also remain private and in the cloud indefinitely without degrading or going missing. Doctors and employees at the hospital can also utilize handheld devices to communicate this information almost instantly with one another.

These databases are capable of holding much more information than patient forms. These web clouds can also store numerous images, videos and audio files. It's also very effortless to scan old paperwork and forms into web based electronic health record systems. There are many pluses to keeping a digital version of patient records such as, reducing paper waste, adhering to meaningful use policies and improving communication time.
